Our Approach to Medical Yoga
MYT is a unique series of individualized, therapeutic yoga sequences (asana) designed to educate and engage patients in the treatment, management and prevention of acute and chronic injuries. The client is evaluated using objective measures of mobility, stability, breath patterns and autonomic function. Then a tailored program for the individual is created using a collaborative approach, to address the person as a whole. The Biopsychosocial approach to treatment we use assesses and addresses the physical, intellectual, energetic, psycho-emotional, and spiritual aspect of the person and the issue they are seeking help with.
Benefits of Medical Yoga
Breathing: Therapeutic Yogic breathing (pranayama) is used for stress reduction, tapping directly into the autonomic nervous system, stabilization of deep “core”, and clearing of sinus and nasal passages.
Stability proceeds mobility: Yoga should not about flexibility or mobility, it’s about stability and controlling the mobility in a stable manner. Training and education on gaining dynamic stability about the low back/pelvis, shoulder girdle (scapulothoracic), and upper cervical/TMJ is paramount.
Subtle body comprehension: Space, time, and patience are taken to create a therapeutic environment in which clients can connect their brains with their bodies for improving a better sense of physical and mental wholeness.
Variety and Adaptability: Any body can do yoga. With MYT, programming is specific for the individual and therapists are well trained in modifications and enhancements to make a program that sets the client up for success and progress for their goals.
